AI, if used in any generative way, needs to be disclosed, right?
I noticed that Lutris, which uses Claude code, does not disclose it, and is only noticable if you go to their github.
And if a big project like that is doing so, there has to be others ignoring this.
I think AI made code should be disclosed no matter what.
The policy requires apps to disclose AI usage at submission time only. We dont have the ressources to run after who may or may not ensloppify after the fact for the thousands of applications published. Theres been people reporting it when apps use AI but we cant really do anything about it.
So that is also a reason why reviewers tend to be very harsh is that we need to trust the submitters and their work in the first place, and set a high standard. Once theyre in the club, we as bouncers cant really do much.
no humans do not deserve the courtesy of AI disclosure when people use it harass devs. but, I am wasting my breathe here. this will get ignored as more people overwhelm my reasonable take with concern for the head space and mental well-being of developers who deserve to have their work time unbothered. only to be overwhelmed by floods of people begging for AI disclosure which they do not deserve. is what it is. unfortunately you will all get your AI disclosure which is to be very expected.
This is a useless policy if y’all aren’t gonna to actually enforce anything.
It is enforced during the submission process.
But it was never that new policies were applied retroactively to existing apps. Otherwise, there would be quite a few console apps, or apps not build from source, etc… having to be removed.
Also, and this is the main issue at hand:
Just enforcing the policies during submissions takes up time. Add to that there is active build moderation so that an update doesn’t add unwarranted permissions.
This is all done by a few volunteers who give their spare time to do a thankless work.
I would agree that making sure existing apps follow the rules for AI would be an good idea. But the resources are unfortunately very limited.
Apart from that, for a good disclosure of AI for existing applications you would need to expand the Appstream specification, so that software centers like GNOME Software can display this as well. And that is another thing that requires more effort than you would initially think.
Easy to say, but Flathub is one of the remaining castles of human-written code. It’s not infested with slopware and abandonware. I think you can add your comment about the related applications in some app stores (like GNOME Software) to show your respect or disappointment.
