Firefox, codecs, and BBC videos

The issue: Most BBC news videos either error or turn black after 0s-7s of playback.

Flatpak installed: Firefox 147.0.3

Installed on:

  • Dell Inspiron 7580, Bazzite 6.17.7-ba25.fc43.x86_64
  • Dell Latitude 5520, Bazzite 6.17.7-ba25.fc43.x86_64
  • Hyper-V VM (Asus X570/5950X/7900XTX), Bazzite 6.17.7-ba25.fc43.x86_64

Furthermore, on all of those three systems, all BBC videos play 100% okay within Chromium and LibreWolf.

Going back to Firefox, live streaming seems okay from the BBC website - it’s the news item videos that are typically 1m-4m long, e.g. T20 World Cup: New Zealand's Finn Allen & Tim Seifert record-breaking partnership in win over UAE - BBC Sport

FYI, I could recreate the BBC video error on a VM with Fedora 43, and then fix it by rpm/dnf installing a load of codecs. I don’t know which actual codec(s) fixed it - dozens/hundreds were installed following “Espionage724’s” response in this article: What is best way to install codecs - Fedora Discussion

Any/all help most gratefully received.

Try installing org.freedesktop.Platform.ffmpeg-full//24.08 flatpak extension
